Why do you think the grammar function on my wp program is always trying to stick semi-colons everywhere? It doesn't seem to have a high school education never mind college.
I got that same piece of advice almost simultaneously several years ago. One came from an editor when I started freelance writing for the Houston Chronicle, and the other from a published novelist when I submitted a manuscript in a workshop for critique. However, I see them all the time now in published nonfiction and fiction - print and online.
