Here in sunny Los Angeles some years ago, composer Arnold Shoenberg, believing himself to be the model for Adrian Leverkuhn, the central character of Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus, ran into Mann at the Westward Ho grocery market (now a Natural Foods) in Brentwood and shouted, "I do not have syphilis!"
Not only wasn't Doctor Faustus easy to write, it's almost impossible to read.
