Of late, I've so been feeling those very words.

did wodehouse say that when he was older? i wonder when and, i suppose, if one should cease interacting with the world. for me, new experience changes my perspective in, i hope, a positive way. do you think he felt that he was where he wanted to be? do you think he feared losing something that was working if he continued along his path?

I have no idea how old Wodehouse was when he said or wrote that.

I feel the way he did only when I'm writng a book. Although I'm not keen on socializing in a big way when I'm not writing.

I don't believe you have to have new experiences all the time to gain material. Unless you were born in a cave and left there alone until you were eighteen, you have plenty to write about. Even the cave person would have at least one book... living in a cave.

I believe writers basically have what they need by eighteen because what we write about, though it comes out in different forms, is family. It doesn't matter if you're writing a mystery, science fiction, a literary novel (hate that term) or any other type of fiction, it's all family. Over and over and over again.

i suppose i just have a different way of seeing things. i am not so young, but to me right now it seems like while the basic material may have been collected already, the way i see it and experience it and understand it changes because i don't stay standing in the same place all the time. not that i am running away or anything ... it is more that i feel that the more flexible i can be, the better my work and my life may be. does that make any sense? not sure if i am explaining clearly. this is also probably why i can't write fiction for toffee, but do ok when it comes to things that have actually happened.

as for being born in a cave, the story of baby abraham in the cave happens to be my favourite midrash!
