My other favorite analogy is one Stephen King used: Writing is like digging around a tiny piece of metal you find sticking up out of the backyard. After months of hard labor, you might dig up an old stove. Or you might dig up a battleship. That's the fun of writing--you just don't know until you start digging.
Unfortunately, it is sometimes just that tiny piece of metal after all and it cuts your foot, gives your gangrene and you lose your leg. Sorry-its another cloudy day in Detroit and the incinerator is blowing our way.

Duane...I like the King quote very much. This and Doctorow's really are addressing the outline or don't outline question.
Patti...go to a movie, eat some chocolate do something. However I'd rather lose my leg than have to write and outline.
