Though I'm a big fan of Elmore Leonard's, I think his suggestion is too cute by half. Weather plays major roles in the novels of Simenon and Ed McBain/Evan Hunter; place description informs story and character in the books Tony Hillerman and Brian Garfield; backstory in the novels of Denise Mina and Ruth Rendell helps create real people rather than sketches or cartoons.--Ed Gorman
